Wisconsin might not be good: Walk on Fan’s February 24th Bracket Update

1 Seeds:

Auburn (2-0), Duke (2-0), Florida (2-0), Houston (2-0)

2 Seeds:

Tennessee (1-0), Alabama (1-1), St Johns (2-0), Michigan St (2-0)

Auburn, Duke, Florida, and Houston together went 8-0 and outscored their opponents by 145 points. The teams they beat? 5 of them are teams currently in the tournament or on the bubble. At this point, the top four teams in the country have quite a large cushion after Alabama had a 1-1 week. St Johns and Michigan St are both riding hot weeks and upsets to move up the bracket seed line.

3 Seeds:

Texas Tech (1-1), Wisconsin (1-1), Iowa State (1-1), Texas A&M (0-2)

4 Seeds:

Michigan (0-1), Kentucky (1-1), Maryland (1-0), Mizzou (1-1)

I might have jumped the gun a tiny bit when it comes to Wisconsin. A pitiful loss to Oregon drops them only one seed thanks to a beat down of Illinois early in the week. Texas Tech and Iowa State sink a little bit after 1-1 weeks while Texas A&M is teetering on becoming a 4 seed after a rough week. Kentucky and Maryland did what they were supposed to do this week while Mizzou did just the opposite. An upset of Alabama counts more than a loss to Arkansas in the long run.

5 Seeds:

Purdue (0-2), Arizona (1-1), Kansas (1-1), Clemson (1-0)

6 Seeds:

Marquette (1-1), St Marys (2-0), Louisville (1-0), UCLA (1-1)

Purdue was sitting pretty when I started this bracket projection series, but since then, they’ve stacked some rough losses. The beatdown from Indiana hurts the most out of all of them. Arizona and Kansas are the latest victims from the hottest team in the country, BYU. Marquette and UCLA lost to bad teams and moved down slightly because of it. St Marys’ win over Gonzaga clinches their second straight West Coast regular season title.

7 Seeds:

Oregon (2-0), Gonzaga (1-1), Mississippi St (1-1), Creighton (1-0)

8 Seeds:

Vanderbilt (1-1), Ole Miss (0-1), BYU (2-0), VCU (2-0)

2 weeks ago, BYU was a bubble team barely holding on to relevance. Now? They’re the hottest team in the country, upsetting both Kansas and Arizona this week. While the win against Arizona was controversial, it’s still a win. They have one more chance at a resume-building win with Iowa State on the schedule, but I think it’s safe to pencil them off the bubble. Gonzaga, Ole Miss, and Miss St had underwhelming weeks. Oregon got its resume-defining win thanks to Wisconsin’s late-game collapse. VCU was able to hold off George Mason, solidifying its case for an at-large bid.

9 Seeds:

Baylor (0-2), Illinois (0-2), UConn (1-1), Memphis (1-0)

10 Seeds:

Texas (0-1), Utah St (2-0), Arkansas (1-1), New Mexico (0-1)

Baylor and Illinois are both in free fall, threatening what used to be locks for the tournament. Arkansas’ win against Mizzou gives them some leeway before a winnable end to their schedule. Utah St got a good win against San Diego St while New Mexico falls slightly after losing to Boise St. Texas followed the rest of their state in losing a disappointing game this week. Texas might need to go 3-1 down the stretch to make the tournament at this point.

11 Seeds:

Ohio State (0-2), Xavier (2-0), West Virginia (1-1), San Diego St (1-1), Nebraska (0-1), Wake Forest (0-1)

Ohio State is collapsing at the wrong time and is on the verge of losing their spot in the tournament. Xavier is doing the opposite and getting hot at the exact right time. Nebraska and Wake Forest both had losses that should have taken them out of the tournament, but almost every other bubble team had a rough week.

12 Seeds:

UC San Diego (2-0), Drake (2-0), Yale (2-0), McNeese (2-0)

13 Seeds:

Liberty (1-0), GCU (1-0), High Point (2-0), Akron (1-1)

14 Seeds:

Arkansas St (1-1), Lipscomb (1-1), South Dakota St (1-1), Samford (1-1)

15 Seeds:

Towson (1-1), Robert Morris (2-0), Bryant (1-1), Central Conn St (2-0)

16 Seeds:

Montana (1-0), Quinnipiac (1-0), Norfolk St (2-0), SEMO (2-0), Southern U (2-0), Bucknell (2-0)

Like in previous weeks, nothing crazy going on here. Quite a few of the conferences got closer, but I only switched 2 teams this week. Bucknell replaces American and Robert Morris replaces Milwaukee. Other than that, just some switching up of seeds.

First 4 out:

Indiana (1-1), Oklahoma (1-1), North Carolina (2-0), San Francisco (2-0)

Next 4 out:

SMU (1-1), Georgia (0-1), Boise St (2-0), North Texas (2-0)

Indiana and Oklahoma had resume defining wins, putting them squarely back on the bubble. North Carolina is still winning games that they should but still need a resume boost against Duke or in the ACC tournament. SMU and Georgia had bad weeks, pushing them down to next 4 out. Boise St and North Texas benefit from George Mason and UC Irvine losing must-win games to stay on the bubble.
