Dates, Locations, and Opponents Are Set.
In a normal year, there are a lot of B1G vs SEC bowl games. This year, there are even more. College Football is racing towards a Power 2 and all other conferences are becoming less relevant. See, 13-0 FSU missing the CFP as proof. Of the 12 teams playing in the NY6, 10 of them will be in the SEC or B1G next year (5 a piece).
I have the Pac-12 members who are joining the B1G in August 2024 listed as “Bonus” B1G bowl matchups. All 4 of the new B1G members (USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington) have at least 6 wins this season, which is more than B1G West was able to muster.
- Odds listed were taken from FanDuel at the time of writing.
SEC vs B1G
Rose Bowl: 1 Michigan vs 4 Alabama (+1.5) – CFP
Jan 1, 2024 – Rose Bowl Stadium – Pasadena, California
Cotton Bowl: 7 Ohio State vs 9 Missouri (+3.5)
Dec 29, 2023 – AT&T Stadium – Arlington, Texas
Peach Bowl: 10 Penn State vs 11 Ole Miss (+3.5)
Dec 30, 2023 – Mercedes-Benz Stadium – Atlanta, Georgia
Citrus Bowl: 17 Iowa vs 21 Tennessee (-7)
Jan 1, 2024 – Camping World Stadium – Orlando, Florida
ReliaQuest Bowl: Wisconsin vs 13 LSU (-10.5)
Jan 1, 2024 – Raymond James Stadium – Tampa, Florida
Music City Bowl: Maryland vs Auburn (-2.5)
Dec 30 2023 – Nissan Stadium – Nashville, Tennessee
(Bonus) Sugar Bowl: 2 Washington vs 3 Texas (-4.5) – CFP
Jan 1, 2024 – Caesars Superdome – New Orleans, Louisiana
Based on the 2024 conference lineups, we have an all-SEC vs B1G college football playoff. The Big 3 in the B1G East are all favored, but every other B1G team playing an SEC opponent is an underdog. The middle of the B1G needs to step up its game (at least according to oddsmakers in the desert).
Other B1G Bowl Games

Quick Lane Bowl: Minnesota vs Bowling Green (+5.5)
Dec 26, 2023 – Ford Field – Detroit, Michigan
(Bonus) Fiesta Bowl: 8 Oregon vs 23 Liberty (+14.5)
Jan 1, 2024 – State Farm Stadium – Glendale, Arizona
(Bonus) Holiday Bowl: USC vs 15 Louisville (-6.5)
Dec 27, 2023 – Petco Park – San Diego, California
(Bonus) LA Bowl: UCLA vs Boise State (+2.5)
Dec 16, 2023 – SoFi Stadium – Inglewood, California
There aren’t a lot of great matchups in the non-SEC category, and half of these teams are Pac-12 schools. Normally the B1G would also have a spot in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl (vs Kansas this year)… but there weren’t enough 6 win teams in the B1G to fill the bowl allotments. Minnesota had to settle for the Quick Lane Bowl instead of the Guaranteed Rate because they were required to be “picked last” due to their 5-7 record.
I think the most interesting of these matchups is actually Rutgers vs Miami. Both are former Big East Schools and this is a better Rutgers team than people realize.
It’s also ironic that UCLA gets the “worst” bowl game, but gets to play in the best stadium: SoFi.
